Loretta Vileikyte, UK

Lancaster University Medical School, Lancaster, UK

Loretta Vileikyte, MD, PhD is a Research Professor with over 20 years of experience in clinical research on diabetic complications. She pioneered research into the interplay between biomedical and psychological/behavioral aspects of diabetic neuropathy and foot ulceration. Her work integrates biological and psychosocial risk factors to produce clinically meaningful outcomes.

In collaboration with colleagues in the UK and USA (Johns Hopkins, Rutgers, Penn State, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and the University of Miami, where she has been a visiting faculty member since 2002), Prof. Vileikyte led large-scale multicenter transatlantic research projects. These projects developed important patient-reported outcome measures, including the Neuropathy and Foot Ulcer-Specific Quality of Life instrument (NeuroQoL), used in EDIC (the DCCT follow-up), and the Patient Interpretation of Neuropathy (PIN) instrument for assessing cognitive and emotional representations of neuropathy guiding foot self-care.

She led an NIH-funded study (RO1-DK070166 NIH/NIDDK) investigating psychological stress and diabetic foot ulcer healing, generating one of the largest foot ulcer tissue biomarker databases and supporting further NIH-funded research on CYP11B1 as a biomarker for ulcer healing and on cast walker design in foot ulcer management.

Currently, she studies psychological factors influencing patient acceptance of digital technology in foot ulcer prevention, including SBIR and Diabetes UK-funded projects.

Prof. Vileikyte has 81 publications, over 8,500 citations, 43% of papers in the top 10% globally cited, and an H-index of 40.
