Tong Zhang, an associate chief physician in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at The First People’s Hospital of Guangzhou, traveled to the United States in 2018 to study under Professor Ivan, a renowned pioneer in the field of the gut-brain axis. Immersing himself in neuroscience research, he proposed the novel theory of the “sympathetic gut-brain axis” in regulating food intake and provided an elegant neuro-mechanistic explanation for the “ileal brake” phenomenon. These breakthrough findings were published in the top-tier journal Cell. After returning to China, he established his own laboratory focusing on the intersection of digestive diseases and neuroscience, dedicated to translating cutting-edge neural regulatory mechanisms into new clinical strategies and bringing innovative treatments to patients with digestive disorders.
