Prof. Juliana Chan established the Hong Kong Diabetes Register in 1995 to study the clinical course and genetic associations of diabetes. In 2007, she introduced the Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation (JADE®) Programme, which combines clinical technology with a validated diabetes care model. It promotes personalized care and aims to reduce complications in 11 Asian countries and regions. Her research team uses biobanks and databases to identify Asian biogenetic markers for precision medicine in diagnosing and classifying diabetes.

Accredited as endocrinologist and clinical pharmacologist with training in psychiatry and epidemiology, Professor Chan’s areas of interest include epidemiology, genomics and genetics, clinical trials, and diabetes care models. She has published over 700 peer-reviewed articles and 26 book chapters. Prof. Chan is the Chair of The Lancet Commission on Diabetes joined by 43 experts from all continents which publish a roadmap for policymakers, planners, payors, providers, patients and the public to reduce the global burden of diabetes.

Professor Chan is currently Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics, Director of Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity and Director of Clinical Research Management Office at The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Honorary Consultant at Prince of Wales Hospital and Chief Executive Officer of Asia Diabetes Foundation in Hong Kong. She is recipient of Peter Bennett Award, The Xiaoren Pan Distinguished Research Award for Epidemiology of Diabetes in Asia, Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes, and Award for Epidemiology and Public Health.
