Luc Van Gaal, Belgium

Luc Van Gaal graduated from the University of Antwerp in 1978 with a cum lauda degree in medicine. He earned specialist degrees in internal medicine, endocrinology, and metabolism in 1983. He is now responsible for the Metabolic Unit at Antwerp University Hospital, and was appointed Professor of Medicine in 1992. He is currently – as emeritus professor – an honorary consultant at the department of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism at the University Hospital.

Professor Van Gaal’s main clinical and research interests include obesity, type 2 diabetes, and lipid metabolism. He is a member of many scientific societies and editorial boards. He is a board member of the Belgian Association for the Study of Obesity (BASO) and past-president of the Belgian Endocrine Society and Belgian Diabetes Association. In 2000, he co-presided the 10th European Congress on Obesity held in Antwerp.
He has been involved as principal investigator to a number of (outcome) trials in the field of obesity and diabetes.
He recently is also involved in liver MAFLD research.
He is involved in many research developments of anti obesity agents.

Prof. Van Gaal has published more than 500 papers in international medical journals, mainly in the areas of general endocrinology, obesity, diabetes and lipids – including Nature, NEJM, JCI, Circulation –  and has contributed to a number of textbooks about obesity.
Dr Van Gaal lectures all over the world on topics of diabetes, obesity, anti-obesity pharmacotherapy in particular.
