MD, PhD

As the Principal Investigator of the Obesity Research Group at the National Clinical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases, Dr. Wang focuses on novel pathogenic mutations and clinical interventions for severe obesity. Through the Genetics of Obesity in Chinese Youth (GOCY) study, his team has identified several novel gene mutations causative of obesity, with a particular emphasis on the RSPO1-LGR4 pathway and its association with cardiometabolic diseases (Endocr Rev 2023; Nat Cell Biol 2013). His research has also demonstrated that the FTO SNP (rs1421085) promotes thermogenesis rather than inhibiting it, correlating with events from the Out-of-Africa migration (Nat Metab 2023; Life Metab 2024). Recently, his team discovered an unidentified brain-to-gut signal that regulates intestinal fat absorption (Nature 2024). Additionally, they have translated these findings into clinical interventions, such as the application of Akkermansia muciniphila (WST-01 strain) in diabetic patients (Cell Metab 2025).
