His major research interests include the role of human microbiome in infectious diseases, metabolic diseases, stroke, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and pregnancy and newborn diseases. He has published over 60 research papers in leading journals including Nature Medicine (cover story), Cell Host & Microbe, Nature Microbiology, Gut, Microbiome etc. He has initiated the Chinese Association for cLinical Microbiome (CALM) with hundreds of hospitals around China and leads many multi-center human microbiome studies.
He is currently the editor-in-chief of Medicine in Microecology (Elsevier) and an editor for mSystems.
